OBJECTIVE: Identify the cognitive factors that affect the admission of applicants to the University of San Carlos of Guatemala. METHOD: The study was carried out with a quantitative approach, descriptive scope and non-experimental design, the universe of study was the applicants who completed their admission process to the University of San Carlos de Guatemala for the 2021-2022 cycle, both from the campus central as well as all University Centers; the sample selection was non-probabilistic, for convenience and voluntary participation, the data collection technique was the survey, which was applied to 1,175 applicants. A systematic review of literature related to the topic of this study was carried out, in order to have the appropriate theoretical foundation. RESULTS: It was identified that the cognitive factor called knowledge/memory was the one with the highest incidence in admission to the USAC, with a 51.1% positive incidence in the applicants who managed to enter and a 43.6% negative incidence in those who did not achieve it. The second factor in order of importance that influenced admission to the USAC was understanding with 18.4% for those who entered and application with 25.4% for those who did not enter. CONCLUSION: The results show that the knowledge acquired, the ability to remember it and understanding are essential cognitive factors to overcome the admission process to the USAC, while application and analysis have a lesser impact on said process.
