Academic mobility and internationalization of university professors: a descriptive study 2018-2023

OBJECTIVE: Analyze the academic mobility and internationalization of university professors at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala between 2018-2023, evaluating the factors that influence participation and the benefits obtained from these programs. METHOD: A mixed approach was adopted, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data collection included the analysis of institutional documents, surveys of a sample of 87 participating professors, and review of academic mobility records provided by the General Coordinator of Cooperation and International Relations and the General Directorate of Teaching of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala. . . RESULTS: Participation in mobility and internationalization programs showed a notable increase between 2018-2023, in 2020 a decrease from 29 to 19 attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. An increase in 2023 with 35 agreements signed. The countries that signed the most agreements with the USAC are Spain 26, Mexico 18, the United States and Colombia 9, Argentina 7, Brazil and Chile 6. In 2023, 530 teachers were beneficiaries of financial aid from DIGED. Participation in various academic events organized by DIGED, with a notable concentration in 702 courses and 572 master's degrees. CONCLUSION: The academic mobility of teachers has been benefited by programs such as ERASMUS, financial aid comes from the General Directorate of Teaching, showing itself to be the key element of professional development.
