Factors influencing the completion efficiency of postgraduate students

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors that determine the terminal efficiency of postgraduate students. METHOD: A qualitative approach with a descriptive scope and a phenomenological design was selected within the framework of the constructivist paradigm. The sample consisted of ten students from the 2019–2023 cohort and five professors from two different master’s programs, selected through theoretical sampling. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews using validated instruments, following the expert judgment technique. The information obtained was analyzed according to the qualitative analysis process and axial coding. RESULTS: The findings show that terminal efficiency is determined by academic, institutional, and personal factors related to academic management, research training, educational innovation, and the socioeconomic conditions of the students. CONCLUSION: Strengthening terminal efficiency requires academic management integrated with strategies of faculty mentoring and student support that promote the timely completion of postgraduate studies.
