OBJECTIVE: determine the main challenges in higher education for the proper use of virtual environments. METHOD: the study was developed under a constructivist paradigm, with qualitative methodology and phenomenological design; The participation of thirty-five university professors was obtained, being the sample used in the research.
RESULTS: teachers considered it important that the educational entity provides technological equipment, improve the quality of the internet and that the virtual environments team have a greater approach to reinforce soft skills and improve performance; According to the results obtained, a large number of teachers stated that their academic activities improved thanks to the use of virtual environments. Another barrier is the poor quality of the internet connection, this limits the use of virtual tools and spaces. CONCLUSION: teachers are willing to learn and train in the use of virtual environments; There is openness on the part of university authorities because they support and encourage the use of virtual environments in teaching by providing some resources that are available to the teaching staff such as projectors, a virtual environment team and an educational platform. Although teachers value virtual environments and are willing to use them, improvements are needed in training, connectivity and support so that they can make the most of these tools in their teaching practice.
